CIRCULAR LETTER No. 85

Dear colleagues,

It gives me great pleasure to contact you again at the beginning of February 1999, and I would like to take the opportunity to send you all my best wishes for the year.

Our Society's American regional Congress, held in Santiago de Chile, last November, was a great success in terms of participation and also in terms of the quality of the debates. Credit for this success should go to the Chilean organizers, to whom we are very grateful.

1. Forthcoming congresses

Warsaw Congress, 13-17 September 1999

Preparations for this Congress are going ahead. You should by now have received the Congress brochures where you will find all the necessary information; We do hope that all of you will be able to come. One important reminder: the deadline for returning the registration forms has been fixed at 31 May 1999.

The themes to be discussed will be the following:

World Congresses

The XVlth World Congress will take place in Jerusalem from 4 to 9 September 2000. Preparations are now well under way. I would like to remind you that the national reports should be in the hands of the general reporters, the organizers, and myself by 30 June 1999 at the latest. Please find below the titles of the three themes and the names of the reporters:

I. Retirement pensions (social security): national schemes, social insurance and private funds.
General Reporter: Prof. Adrián Goldìn (Argentina).

Il. Industrial relations, including collective disputes, in the public sector.
General Reporter: Prof. Alan Neal (United Kingdom).

III. Similarities and differences between labour contracts and civil and commercial contracts.
General Reporter: Prof. Clyde W. Summers (United States).

Professor A. Lyon-Caen and his colleagues have, for their part, commenced the organization of the following congress in Paris in 2003:

Regional American Congresses

As you know, the next congress will be held in Lima in 2001. Invitations have been submitted by our Mexican and Uruguyan colleagues for 2004 and 2007 respectively, and we thank them for this.

Other congresses

The International Meeting of the Supreme Court will be held in San José (Costa Rica) from 24 to 25 June 1999. The working language will be Spanish and the themes are the following:

1. Expeditious labour dispute proceedings
2. Legal assistance for workers
3. Principles of procedural labour law.

II. Society News

Our warmest congratulations go to our President, Américo PLA RODRIGUEZ, who received the title of Professor Emeritus at the Law Faculty of the University of Montevideo.

I also have pleasure in informing you that Professor Michal SEWERYNSKI has been named as President of the Polish section of the Workers' Law Society and of the Social Security. We sincerely thank Professor Tadeusz ZIELINSKI for his diligence and for his activities in the Executive Committee. We also congratulate the new President whom we all know very well.

On another subject, Professor Marly CARDONE tells us that the Instituto Brasileiro de Direito Social Cesarino Jr. has organized a competition for a " Cesari no Junior" Prize. Contributions should be written in Portuguese and should deal, for the first time, with the "Protection against arbitrary dismissal". The deadline for submission of contributions is 30 June 1999. For any further information, please would you contact Professor Marly Cardone who we must thank for this initiative.

The Treasurer would like to remind national associations that they should pay their annual subscription fee, which amounts to US$7 (seven US dollars) per individual member of each national association per annum. Two dollars from this fee go towards the financing of the internship for young researchers. Please find below the name and address of the bank:
